Family Counseling for Alcohol Abuse in the Treatment Program of Indiana
The family is a very important factor in the addiction treatment program in Indiana. If properly trained and counseled, the family can be quite instrumental in pulling people out of their alcohol related problems. But if not, this same family can be instrumental in pushing people further into their addiction. Hence, the treatment program deals with families in a sensitive manner and uses them constructively in bringing the alcohol patient to a fulfilling sober life.
Why is it needed to counsel families? The following are some reasons:-
1. Families are known to be codependents in the scene of alcohol abuse in Indiana. This happens when the family unknowingly gives the message to the abuser that they do not have a problem and that they do not need treatment. This can keep the patient away from going for treatment because he or she gets the message that the family is supporting the addiction. Families need to be counseled in overcoming codependency issues.
2. Families themselves may develop problems because of the alcohol abuse of a member. Substance abuse resources in Indiana indicate that every alcohol abusing person affects three to four more people significantly. Hence, families may develop problems of a psychiatric nature. They need to be counseled on how to cope with this situation.
3. Families can be a very important support system when the person is trying to come out of the possibilities of relapse after the inpatient treatment program is over. Families are counseled on how to bring the patient to socially constructive activities again and generally deal with the situation so that the chances of a relapse are mitigated.
