Drug abuse is a serious issue that can ruin multiple aspects of someone’s life. While using drugs, they may not realize what they are doing to not only themselves, but to their family.

Because the bonds of a family relationship are often strong, watching a loved one struggle with drug abuse can be incredibly painful. Often, the actions of the person on drugs can actually physically affect them.Often, those who have a drug addiction use the money that they have on drugs. Unfortunately, this money is supposed to be used for things such as grocery, gas, and rent. When the addicted person uses all of the money they have on drugs, they resort to asking family members for money. It is often hard for a family member to turn down this request…even though they are often worried that the money the give will again be used for nothing more than drugs. It is hard for someone to think that they are helping someone out, but be worried that they are endorsing their habit.

The mood swings that come with a drug abuse problem can be unexpected and drastic. These mood swings come from the substance abuse. It is hard for a family member to watch another family member struggle with a drug abuse problem. These mood swings, however, can affect the loved one even more so than expected; harsh words and violent tendencies can scare and harm family members. They feel as though they shouldn’t be afraid of the one that they love. This, however, can become a sad reality when drug abuse has taken over and affected a family member. Between the money and the mood swings, a drug abuse problem by one family member can have both physical and emotional affects on the entire family.
