Many times an intervention is the only way to get an addict into a drug treatment program. Family and friends who care enough to plan and execute a drug intervention can create a very positive change in the person’s life.

They are often at the end of their rope when they get to the point of seriously thinking about doing this. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. A drug intervention can be useful at any stage of drug use, whether it is just beginning, a moderate substance abuse problem, or a severe addiction. There is no reason to wait until the situation has gotten worse in order to plan an intervention. Many people see them as a last resort to plead with the addict to get help, but it doesn’t have to happen like that. When done early, drug interventions can be much simpler and the planning process is much less involved. Addiction treatment and recovery are also easier when they occur earlier. There is no need to wait for someone to hit rock bottom before they can get the professional help that will better their life. In fact, it’s much better not to.

In the beginning of a substance abuse problem, people are sometimes afraid to approach the addict about the subject. The fear making the individual angry or they want to believe that the issue will just go away on its own. In reality, it will probably get much worse rather than better without some type of addiction treatment. As for angering the addict, a lot of this depends on how you approach the topic. State the facts and share your concern, but avoid blaming or judging their behavior. Listen to their concerns, as well. Positive methods of communication can go long way in helping someone with a drug addiction.
